John Oliver played a game with Jimmy Fallon on Monday's Tonight Show called "Hey, Robot," in which they compete to try to get Amazon's Alexa to say certain words. However, Oliver threw a wrench into what would seem to be a product placement deal by addressing some of Amazon's controversial business practices.
After Oliver cussed out Alexa for not deeming his beloved Liverpool F.C. the best football team ever, Fallon laughed and said "This is clearly not a commercial for this," while looking off stage.
"Oh, in which case, I've got another one," Oliver said. "Alexa, how bad are Amazon working conditions?"
Fallon laughed, but quickly jumped in to tell Alexa to stop, but Oliver pressed on. "Alexa, what is 'union-busting?'"
Again, Fallon quickly pre-empted any response to get back to the game. At the end of the segment, while Fallon is loudly throwing to commercial and talking over him, Oliver is speaking directly to the computer, saying "I don't like you, Alexa. I think you're a net negative to humanity. I will never let you in my home."
As you might guess, the Amazon issues are a subject he has covered in some detail on Last Week Tonight.
