In this new teaser for the HBO limited series Mare of Easttown, we see Kate Winslet meeting Guy Pearce at a bar and striking up a conversation that reveals a lot about her character. She's earned the nickname "Ladyhawk" for making a shot in a high school basketball game that Easttown, PA still talks about 25 years later, she lost her dad at 13, followed in his footsteps to become a detective, and she can't stand her mother (Jean Smart). We also see hints of her intensely traumatic experiences on the job that may have driven her to that bar in the first place, including a troubling case of a murdered child.
And we get this demoralizing gem of a quote from Mare: "Doing something great is overrated, because then people expect that from you all the time."
Mare of Easttown premieres April 18 on HBO.
