The popularity of the superhero has exploded in the 21st century, but they've been with us since The Phantom in 1936.
The new Disney+ documentary Behind the Mask is set to tell the tales of inspiration for the greatest heroes from more than 60 years of Marvel Comics, and the importance of keeping larger than life adventures grounded in realistic identities. The legacies of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the powerful image of Captain America punching Adolf Hitler, the genesis of Spider-Man's everyday problems, the importance of Black Panther's "untouched black space" and more are all covered.
Marvel's Behind the Mask premieres February 12 on Disney+.
