Seth Meyers had a field day with Rudy Giuliani's reported ban from Fox News, likely a result of the billion dollar defamation lawsuits filed by Dominion and Smartmatic voting systems. In a new "Closer Look" segment, Meyers compared Giuliani to "a fictional goblin Italian grandmothers threaten children with if they don't brush their teeth," and he mocked the former NYC mayor for being so unhinged on-air that even Fox News won't have him. "It's like breaking up with a boyfriend and telling him, 'No, it's not because my mother doesn't like you!'" joked Meyers. "'You're ugly and bad at sex.'"
Last week, POLITICO Playbook reported that Giuliani and his son Andrew were "banned" from Fox News for almost three months, beginning on September 10 — just one day before Giuliani was scheduled to appear on Fox & Friends to mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. "They banned Rudy from Fox News?" asked Meyers. "That's like banning a turtle from its shell, or like banning the Turtle from the Nike store."
After the POLITICO story broke, a source close to the network told Deadline that the Giulianis weren't outright banned; rather, the former mayor "simply isn't relevant" anymore. "Damn, it's one thing to ban him because you're afraid of the Dominion lawsuit, but to tell him you just don't want him anymore?" said Meyers, before comparing it to a bad breakup. "I'd use the old showbiz expression and say Rudy can't get arrested, but I'm pretty sure he can get arrested."
Of course, Meyers isn't surprised Fox News is unhitching their wagon to Rudy Giuliani. "Maybe he's banned because he regularly went on Fox and showed off other people's incriminating texts and emails and phone calls, and nonsensically waved around random pieces of paper like a guy in Times Square trying to convert you to some weird religion you've never heard of," said the Late Night host.
He added that banning Giuliani could also be a "simple financial and legal calculation" in the wake of the Dominion and Smartmatic's defamation lawsuits. "Rudy played a big part in spreading those lies," said Meyers, as he played a lowlight reel of Giuliani's election conspiracy lies. "If you were on a flight next to someone talking like that, you'd ask the attendant for a parachute."
