It's been eight long months since Stephen Colbert last said Donald Trump's name on-air, but , his streak finally came to an end Thursday as he issued an important reminder about the former president.
"Tonight, I gotta start off talking about a subject I usually don't bring up in polite company," The Late Show host said at the top of his monologue. "Former President Lollacolluda — naturally, we all want to forget about that guy. Since the day he went out and lied about the election on November 5 — since that day, I try not to say his name. We don't show his name on-air. I don't do my impression, because haven't you suffered enough?"
"But, there are times when you just have to slap yourself in the face, put a little cold water on the back of your neck, bear down on the bite stick, and remind yourself just how bad it was by repeating out loud the simple fact: Donald Trump is a fascist."
Colbert's namecheck was met with loud cheers from his audience, who nearly prevented him from explaining what this whole thing is all about. When he was finally able to continue, Colbert explained that this isn't just him "flapping [his] gums;" it's also Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Mark Milley, who writes in his new book that he was concerned Trump would use the military to stay in power if he lost the 2020 election."
"Clearly the former president didn't like the tea that Milley spilley," Colbert continued. "Because earlier today, the ex-prez released a president declaring, 'I'm not into coups!' Adding, 'If I was going to do a coup, one of the last people I would want to do it with is General Mark Milley.'"
"Okay, you've clearly put some thought into this thing you're not into," ripped The Late Show host, before comparing the situation to a guy who definitely isn't into threesomes and definitely hasn't thought about it. "'Honey, come on, I'm not into three-ways! But if I was, I wouldn't do it with our neighbor Alice. Your sister was way hotter.'"
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 PM ET on CBS.
