Stephen Colbert hasn't forgotten about the allegations against Rep. Matt Gaetz, who spent Wednesday tweeting about overturning Roe v. Wade and curtailing abortion rights.
As Colbert explained, Gaetz "took a break from attacking the leaker" of the Supreme Court's draft majority opinion about overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey to "vilify women instead." In a series of tweets that went viral for all the wrong reasons, Gaetz said that pro-choice women are "over-educated, under-loved millennials who sadly return from protests to a lonely microwave dinner with their cats, and no Bumble matches," among other sexist remarks.
But The Late Show host had a savage response for Gaetz, who he described as the "subway rider cheering on the masturbator" as others look away, aghast. "Now, folks, if that statement sounds insane, remember," he said, "For Matt Gaetz, 'overeducated' is any woman who's already graduated high school."
Gaetz, a Florida Republican, is reportedly under federal investigation over allegations that he had sex with a 17-year-old girl and paid for her to travel with him, an act that would violate federal sex trafficking laws. Gaetz has denied the allegations, but one of his associates, Joel Greenberg, has pleaded guilty to six charges, including sex trafficking of a minor.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 PM ET on CBS.
