HBO's upcoming series The Nevers, created by Joss Whedon who left the project last year, shows us a Victorian-era world where those "touched" by a strange mystical event are granted powers that some consider to be in mockery of God.
The "Touched," however, certainly do not consider themselves afflicted and wear their strength proudly on their sleeves. Whedon was perhaps inspired by his work on X-Men comics, in which "mutants" are very much of the same vibe of spectacularly powered people living in a world that hates and fears them.
The Nevers premieres this April on HBO.
