The first season of Only Murders in the Building, Hulu's acclaimed comedy series about a trio of unlikely sleuths/podcasters who band together to solve a murder in their fancy Upper West Side apartment complex, ended with the solving of one murder... only to immediately deliver another.
In the season's final moments, Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshel), irritable Arconia board president, was found stabbed to death in the arms of Mabel (Selena Gomez). So this season, Mabel, Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short) have to clear their own names, solve Bunny's murder, and keep their podcast compelling.
The returning cast of colorful characters would be more than enough to populate this season's murder mystery, but the show is expanding in its sophomore year, and in a show like this, that means new suspects.
Here's a look at who's new this season on Only Murders in the Building, who they're playing, and why they might deserve a spot on Charles, Oliver, and Mabel's suspect wall.
The Academy Award-winning actress appears on the new season of Only Murders in the Building as Bunny's mother, who arrives at the Arconia demanding to know who offed her daughter. She's also after a missing piece of art that becomes one of the first clues in solving Bunny's murder.
Why She Could Be a Suspect: If there's one thing you should know about rich people who get killed, it's that their family members are always suspects. There's always a reason.
Alice is a British-born artist living in Bushwick who reaches out to Mabel with an interest in her artwork.
Why She Could Be a Suspect: A brand new person who suddenly appears to take an interest in Mabel's art at the exact moment that she's accused of murder? Seems suspicious.
Detective Williams (Da'Vine Joy Randolph) is back on the case, trying to solve Bunny's murder while still looking out for these three nitwit podcasters as much as she can. Detective Kreps has no such loyalty to Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, and he's pressing hard to prove that they're guilty of murder.
Why He Could Be a Suspect: Maybe this detective took the good cop/bad cop routine too far. After all, what better way to cover up your crime than to aggressively try to pin the murder on someone else? And if someone really is trying to frame the Only Murders trio, wouldn't a cop be in the best position to plant evidence?
The bad news for season two is that Sting has indeed moved out of the Arconia. But moving into his old apartment is another celebrity: Amy Schumer! And she's a big fan of true-crime podcasts, in particular "Only Murders in the Building." Oliver, always on the lookout for the next opportunity, eagerly takes a meeting to maybe set up a limited series version of the show.
Why She Could Be a Suspect: Who would ever suspect Amy Schumer of committing murder?? But that's exactly why she'd be an incredible final-episode twist for the season. And if she's as obsessed with true-crime podcasts as she says she is, who's to say she wouldn't try to get in on the action personally?
In season one, Charles told the story about his former girlfriend, Emma, whom he dated for many years and who lived with him at the Arconia along with her daughter, Lucy. Charles and Lucy grew very close, and when Emma ended their relationship, Charles was heartbroken.
He and Lucy hadn't been in contact in many years, until Charles got an unexpected text from Lucy in season one. Lucy shows up in season two, which is great news for Charles, even if it's a bit awkward for him to have to relate to a teenager he hasn't seen in years.
Why She Could Be a Suspect: It doesn't seem likely, does it? That's probably just what the show wants you to think!
The first two episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 2 are now streaming on Hulu. New episodes drop Tuesdays through August 23rd.
