Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Nyota Uhura on Star Trek: The Original Series and its subsequent films, had an enormous impact on both the civil rights movement at the time, as Martin Luther King Jr. was famously a fan, but also on the American space program. This trailer for the documentary film Woman in Motion profiles her campaign to change the discriminatory practices of NASA to make sure they grew beyond their white male exclusivity and embraced diversity. Her influence was such that Neil deGrasse Tyson refers to her here as "a force of nature."
Woman in Motion premieres June 3 on Paramount+.
