Today marks the dawn of new era in the streaming wars, as Apple TV+, the first of several high profile new services opens its doors for business. (Disney+ launches on Nov 12, while Peacock and HBO Max are set to bow in the spring.)
Apple launches today with just nine originals, but with big names like Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell, Hailee Steinfeld and Jason Mamoa attached to those projects, it's definitely making a splash. Never ones to stand on the sidelines, Netflix and Amazon have their own high-profile premieres today, including new seasons of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, Queer Eye and Atypical. Here's what's new and noteworthy on this very crowded Friday:
SERIES PREMIERE: Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon lead a star-studded cast in The Morning Show, which follows the behind the scenes drama that unfolds when a Today Show-style a.m. talks how's longtime co-host, played by Steve Carell, is exposed for wrongdoing and quickly shown the door, leaving Aniston's Alex Levy to carry the show, along with Witherspoon's rising star Bradley Jackson. SERIES PREMIERE: If anyone can pull off this unconventional take on the life of poet Emily Dickinson, it's Hailee Steinfeld (or at least so says our Joe Reid). Dickinson follows the legendary writer in her rebellious youth as she pushes societal boundaries. Watch the preview. Streaming on Apple TV+
SERIES PREMIERE: Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Aquaman) returns to series television in See, in which he plays the father of twins born with the power of sight in a world in which humanity has long ago gone blind. Watch the preview. Streaming on Apple TV+
SEASON PREMIERE: Returning for its second season is Amazon's biggest hit Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. The second season finds CIA analyst Ryan (John Krasinski) and James Greer (The Wire's Wendell Pierce) getting caught up in even more action this season, after an ambush leaves one of Ryan's friends dead, and he sets out in search of revenge. SERIES PREMIERE: The latest in a series of alternate history narratives to hit television, For All Mankind imagines a world in which Russia won the space race, but may have made America a better nation by bumping it to second place. Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore is behind this new series that explores what happens when NASA and the nation continue reaching for the stars, striving to put the first woman on the moon, while propelling the country toward a more hopeful future. SERIES PREMIERE: Speaking of optimism and the cosmos, Snoopy in Space finds everyone's favorite beagle, his sidekick Woodstock, and the rest of The Peanuts gang reaching for the stars. Watch the preview. Streaming on Apple TV+
SERIES PREMIERE: With all these new entertainment options, it's hard to imagine finding the time to join a book club, but if anyone can convince us, it's Oprah Winfrey. Oprah's Book Club returns in a fresh form on a new platform. Streaming on Apple TV+
SEASON FINALE: Even with the show's new weekly release schedule, this season of The Great British Baking Show has flown by. The latest winner will be announced at the end of today's finale. For fans worried about baked goods withdrawal, fear not, Paul Hollywood and the rest of the baking team will be back next week with a holiday special. Streaming on Netflix
MOVIE PREMIERE: Kerry Washington stars as a concerned mother in American Son. Based on the Broadway play by Christopher Demos-Brown, the film depicts the tensions with law enforcement as an estranged couple works with police to determine the whereabouts of this missing, biracial son.
