As much as the coronavirus pandemic has forced us to isolate, it's also forced us to iterate. Shot in the homes of its actors, Freeform's two-night limited series event Love in the Time of Corona is just the latest example of how TV has adapted to (and taken inspiration from) the new abnormal. The four part romantic comedy airs in two blocks this Saturday and Sunday night. Also this weekend: HBO's The Vow exposes a cult, Yellowstone's third season comes to a bloody conclusion, and Syfy hands its airwaves over to Sharknado for a marathon of all six films. Here's what's new and noteworthy on TV this weekend:
SATURDAY AUGUST 22
LIMITED SERIES PREMIERE: Hamilton's Leslie Odom Jr headlines an ensemble cast in Love in the Time of Corona, which tells four interwoven stories about the search for love and connection amid the pandemic. The first two episodes in the four-part series air back-to-back. Watch the trailer. 8:00 PM ET on Freeform
CABLE PREMIERE: HBO's big Saturday night movie premiere is Queen & Slim. The 2019 film tells the story of Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) whose first date is interrupted by a traffic stop that ends in tragedy, forcing them to go on the run. Melina Matsoukas (Insecure, Master of None) directs from a screenplay by Lena Waithe. Watch the trailer. 8:00 PM ET on HBO
MOVIE MARATHON: Though the curtain fell on the Sharknado franchise after 2018's The Last Sharknado, all six Grade-Z made for TV screamers are airing as part of Syfy's One Last Bite of Summer Marathon. Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills, 90210) plays Fin Shepard throughout the fishy saga. The fun begins at 8:30 AM ET on Syfy
LIVE SPORTS: The Los Angeles Lakers take on the Portland Trail Blazers as the NBA Playoffs continue from the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT on ABC
NEW EPISODE: A night clerk pursues spectral visitors on Hotel Paranormal. Meanwhile, a wife is terrorized as her hubby sleeps. 10:00 PM ET on Travel
SUNDAY AUGUST 23
SERIES PREMIERE: As Primetimer's Sarah D Bunting writes, HBO's nine-part NXIVM docuseries The Vow is poised to be our next true crime obsession, in the tradition of Wild Wild Country and Going Clear. Watch the trailer. 10:00 PM ET on HBO
SEASON FINALE: A huge hit before the pandemic, the Kevin Costner-led drama Yellowstone has continued breaking ratings records in its third season. With the action reaching a gruesome boiling point last week, the season finale promises to bring the inevitable face-off between Costner's John Dutton and his season-long antagonist Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway). 9:00 PM ET on Paramount Network
NEW EPISODE: Tyler won the Head of Household competition on Big Brother Thursday, which means Janelle and Kaysar are in big trouble. Can they avoid getting nominated? Plus, the Safety Suite competition will mean immunity for two other houseguests. 8:00 PM ET on CBS
SEASON FINALE: Ronnie (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine) finds a way to clear his conscience on The Chi. Meanwhile, Tiffany (Hannaha Hall) jumps at the chance for a better future. Watch a preview. 9:00 PM ET on Showtime
SEASON FINALE: The second season of NOS4A2 comes to a close with Vic (Ashleigh Cummings) taking the fight to Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto). Meanwhile, Tabitha (Ashley Romans) and Lou (Jonathan Langdon) labor to unravel a puzzle. Watch a preview. 10:00 PM ET on AMC
NEW EPISODE: Baba (Dipo Ola) and Freddy (Hermione Corfield) put the pedal to the metal with a victim in their trunk on We Hunt Together. Meanwhile, a cup of tea leads Jackson (Babou Ceesay) and Lola (Eve Myles) to an epiphany. Watch a preview. 10:00 PM ET on Showtime
LIMITED SERIES FINALE: The second half of Love in the Time of Corona finds each of the couples planning virtual gatherings and dealing with domestic strife. Parts 3 and 4 air back-to-back beginning at 8:00 PM ET on Freeform
