As Primetimer's Aaron Barnhart writes today, the new FOX series NEXT has more than one thing in common with 24, another high-octane thriller that once aired on the same network. For one, they both share the same showrunner; and for another, both were built around themes that proved to be eerily precient on their respective premiere dates. In 24's case it was domestic terrorism (the show was originally set to premiere the day after 9/11), and with NEXT it's Artificial Intellidence gone amuck (the show arrives amid a paranoia-inducing election cycle that's seen conspiracy theories and indeed AI itself employed like never before). NEXT premieres tonight on FOX.

SEASON PREMIERE: The underlying gag behind Ellen's Game of Games has always been seeing the eternally "nice" Ellen DeGeneres break character to torture contestants as they take on a series of odd ball challenges. Given the hits DeGeneres' image has taken over the past few months, it will be interesting to see how she balances the show's primary conceit with winking attempts to suggest she really isn't as unforgiving as she's "pretending" to be. Watch the preview. 8:00 PM ET on NBC
SERIES REVIVAL: Hot on the heels of its surprise success with 16 and Recovering, MTV is bringing back the precursor to its Teen Mom franchise, 16 and Pregnant .The new six-part revival features interviews and video journals from expectant mothers, and other family and friends affected by their impending special deliveries. 9:00 PM ET on MTV
ORIGINAL MOVIE: Veena Sud, the puppet master behind AMC's polarizing series The Killing, reunites with that show's star, Mireille Enos, for The Lie. The new original film from producer Jason Blum (Get Out, BlacKkKlansman) tells the convoluted tale of two friends, an apparent crime, and a web of lies. Joey King and Peter Sarsgaard star. BROADCAST PREMIERE: The studio behind Swamp Thing abruptly pulled the plug in the midst of the show's one and only season on DC Universe in 2019. Now as networks search for "gently used shows" to flesh out their fall schedules, the series is getting its first broadcast run on The CW. Watch the trailer. 8:00 PM ET on The CW
