Black Mirror Is Back With More Tales of Technological Terror

This week, Black Mirror’s sixth season continues to plumb the depths of our fear of technology. Meanwhile, Robert Carlyle reunites with his Full Monty mates, Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan make an unlikely zombie-fighting team in The Walking Dead: Dead City, and comedian John Early shoots for superstardom with his format-breaking stand-up special Now More Than Ever.

Black Mirror Season 6

Thursday, Netflix (Full Season)

With an entire branch of the entertainment industry currently on strike partly due to fears about the malign influence of artificial intelligence, the time is ripe for creator Charlie Brooker to bring us five more tales of technology run amok. Brooker, ever inventive in seeking new ways to unnerve his viewers, promises to keep us on our toes, explaining to Netflix, “Alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes, we’ve also got a few new elements, including some I’ve previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what ‘a Black Mirror episode’ even is.” Yikes. Look for a typically diverse and talented crew of actors bringing Brooker’s technological nightmares to life, including Zazie Beetz, Aaron Paul, Annie Murphy, Salma Hayek, and Josh Hartnett.

The Full Monty

Wednesday, Hulu (Full Season)

It’s been 26 years since Robert Carlyle, Tom Wilkinson, and Mark Addy stripped down for the runaway hit comedy The Full Monty. After it was adapted into an equally successful Broadway musical, FX decided the world was ready to see the now sixtysomething actors take their kit off once again. The limited series checks back in on the original film’s gaggle of rundown Sheffield blokes as they continue to reckon with dissatisfaction in life and harsh economic realities. In addition to Carlyle, Addy, and Wilkinson, original co-stars Paul Barber and Steve Huison join the fun when all eight episodes premiere Wednesday.

The Walking Dead: Dead City

Thursday, AMC+

AMC is betting viewers aren’t tired of zombies as yet another The Walking Dead spinoff hits their airwaves. Plucking two of the original series’s most popular characters, Lauren Cohan’s Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan, is a good start, especially considering that the two have some deep and bloody issues to work out. Dropping the characters into a zombie-infested Manhattan cut off from the outside world adds some new scenery and novel dangers, while Maggie’s attempt to retrieve kidnapped teenaged son Herschel (Logan Kim) provides a ticking clock for the uneasy allies to work against. The six-episode season also features Friday Night Lights’ Gaius Charles, Michael Anthony, and Željko Ivanek as the big bad, a former associate of Negan’s named The Croat. (Apart from the hordes of walking undead, of course.)

John Early: Now More Than Ever

Saturday, 10:00 PM ET on HBO

John Early’s first HBO comedy special isn’t your typical hourlong stand-up set, but that’s to be expected from the skilled Search Party and The Afterparty star. Now More Than Ever sees Early, as swaggering frontman of the band John Early and the Lemon Squares, take to a smoky Brooklyn stage with a raucous blend of stand-up, cover songs (of everyone from Britney Spears to Neal Young), and Spinal Tap-style backstage interviews, all of which combine to show off the various sides of a singular comic talent.
