Plus, Melanie Lynskey leads the Yellowjackets through another season of stinging secrets, and Mae Whitman wonders what all that singing is about in Hulu’s musical romance Up Here.

With Better Call Saul wrapping up its award-winning, six-season run in August 2022, AMC was in the market for its next prestige TV series. Naturally, the network turned to Saul star Bob Odenkirk for this eight-episode adaptation of Richard Russo’s novel Straight Man. Odenkirk plays William Henry Devereaux, Jr., a failed novelist and disaffected English professor at a small and unremarkable Pennsylvania college. He’s joined by an eclectically outstanding cast, including Mireille Enos as Hank’s wife Lily, Oscar Nuñez, Kyle MacLachlan, Deidrich Bader, and Cedric Yarbrough.

Waco: American Apocalypse

Wednesday, Netflix

This three-episode documentary series seeks to unravel the explosive conflict behind the deadly 1993 siege on the heavily armed Branch Davidian cult, led by self-proclaimed messiah David Koresh. Prompted by reports of child sexual abuse and illegal weapons stockpiling, the ATF and FBI surrounded the group’s Waco, Texas compound, resulting in a 51-day standoff that led to 76 deaths and years of conspiracy theories. American Apocalypse, which claims to be the "definitive account" of the conflict, boasts interviews with those on both sides, including one of Koresh’s spiritual wives and FBI negotiator Gary Noesner.

Wednesday, 10:30 PM ET on Comedy Central

Andy Samberg produces and stars in an animated series about a has-been celebrity archaeologist, Rip Digman, coming out of retirement to uncover ancient relics, recover his fame as the coolest guy since Indiana Jones, and just maybe save the world. Samberg, patterning Rip’s bluster after National Treasure-era Nicolas Cage (and resurrecting his “Get in the Cage” Saturday Night Live segments), swaggers alongside fellow funny people Tim Robinson, Melissa Fumero, and Tim Meadows, and re-teams with Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Neil Campbell to make Rip Digman’s grand adventures suitably silly.

With a possible Russian mole stalking the highest halls of the U.S. government, FBI agent Gabriel Basso (Peter Sutherland) is tasked with ferreting out the traitor and protecting a targeted-for-assassination CEO (Luciane Buchanan). Could the two mysteries be connected? (Spoiler: Yes.) Created by The Shield’s Shawn Ryan, The Night Agent also stars D.B. Woodside and recent Oscar nominee Hong Chau.

Friday, Showtime (Streaming and On Demand)

In Yellowjackets’ eagerly awaited second season, the survivors of the 1996 plane crash fight to survive winter in the Canadian wilderness, while their adult counterparts continue to face up to the consequences of what happened out there. A murderers' row of talented actors are back, with Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress, and Juliette Lewis (and their impeccably cast younger selves played by Sophie Nélisse, Sammi Hanratty, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sophie Thatcher) driving the thrillingly dark drama. The Season 2 premiere drops Friday for Showtime subscribers and airs on Showtime proper Sunday, March 26.

Friday, Hulu (Full Season)

It’s tough enough when the voices in your head whisper about what you’re doing wrong. But what happens when those voices team up and sing show tunes? That’s the premise of Hulu’s musical romance series, where would-be lovers Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes find their inner doubts manifesting as judgmental choruses featuring John Hodgman, Katie Finneran, and Andréa Burns. There’a a ton of Tony and Oscar-winning talent behind the internal musical turmoil, including Dear Evan Hansen’s Steven Levenson and Disney songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (of “Let It Go” fame).
