Jon Hamm Does His Best Elon Musk Impression in The Morning Show Season 3

The Morning Show Season 3 trades one late-aughts TV star for another as Jon Hamm fills the void left by the death of Steve Carell's Mitch Kessler. Also this week: Norman Reedus reprises his role as Daryl Dixon in the latest The Walking Dead spin-off, Hulu's Onyx Collective brings The Other Black Girl to the screen, and more.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

Sunday, 9:00 PM ET on AMC and Streaming on AMC+

Norman Reedus just can't escape the zombie apocalypse. 10 months after The Walking Dead concluded its supersized final season, Reedus' hunter Daryl Dixon returns to AMC with an eponymous spin-off. After the events of the series finale, Daryl washes ashore in France, with no memory of how he got there. As he struggles to piece together what happened and find his way home, he crosses paths with a child named Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) who has the potential to be humanity's savior and the mysterious woman tasked with protecting him, Isabelle (Clémence Poésy). Daryl agrees to escort Laurent and Isabelle to safety, but their journey across a countryside dominated by the undead proves far more treacherous than any of them could have imagined.

Much has been written about the similarities between Daryl Dixon and HBO's The Last of Us — the "guide a child with the power to end the zombie apocalypse to safety" plot is an unfortunate coincidence — but executive producer Greg Nicotero promises the spin-off is "a continuation of Daryl's story," rather than a standalone narrative like TLOU. Daryl's friend Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), who was slated to lead the series with Reedus before dropping out, will also appear in the show in a more limited capacity, giving longtime fans something to look forward to over the six-episode run. Those unable to wait for the linear airing on Sunday nights can stream episodes earlier in the day on AMC+.

Welcome to Wrexham Season 2 Premiere

Make no mistake: It's win or go home for Wrexham AFC and co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. After a devastating loss in the 2021–2022 playoff semifinals, the fifth-tier Red Dragons are more determined than ever to return to the English Football League. Management has invested heavily in the team's long-term success by bringing in talented new players and embarking upon a major stadium renovation, but injuries, a new rival, and bureaucracy stall their progress.

Of course, Wrexham fans know how Season 2 will end — with a historic promotion out of the National League — but watching the team and their Hollywood owners get to that point is a uniquely uplifting experience. (Formula 1: Drive to Survive wishes it could squeeze this much juice out of Max Verstappen's dominance.) The 15-episode season also offers a self-reflective look at the show's impact on the Welsh town, which has seen a boost in tourism and interest from fans from around the world. As it did last year, Welcome to Wrexham remains focused on the community around the football club and the newfound hope that emerges as the Red Dragons inch closer to promotion.

It's not exactly fair to say that The Morning Show has gotten any less bonkers in its third season. The drama's latest iteration features storylines about America's sweetheart Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) being launched into space, a potential takeover by Elon Musk stand-in Paul Marks (Jon Hamm), and a cyberattack that threatens to expose Bradley Jackson's (Reese Witherspoon) darkest secrets. To be sure, there's still plenty of backstabbing and skullduggery afoot as UBA's executives, on-air personalities, and producers jockey for position in this new world order, so fans who prefer to savor the mess will have plenty to enjoy.

But even amid the off-the-rails drama, The Morning Show Season 3 is considerably more focused than last year's misguided attempt to redeem serial sexual harasser Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) in the name of "saying something" about cancel culture. Hamm is a great addition to the cast, and his character keeps the show on a forward trajectory that proves especially welcome after Season 2's wheel-spinning. That, combined with consistently high-level performances, makes this season feel like a return to form for a show that was once the crown jewel in the Apple TV+ slate.

The Other Black Girl

Wednesday, Hulu (Full Season)

Onyx Collective, the Hulu brand behind Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo's UnPrisoned, strikes gold again with The Other Black Girl, an adaptation of Zakiya Dalila Harris' 2021 novel of the same name. For years, editorial assistant Nella (Sinclair Daniel) has felt alone and marginalized as the only person of color at a successful publishing house, but when another Black woman, Hazel-May McCall (Ashleigh Murray), is hired, Nella feels like things are finally turning around. But after Nella receives a threatening message telling her to leave Wagner Books and red flags emerge in her friendship with Hazel, she begins to question how well she really knows her new work bestie — and the colleagues and authors she's long respected.

Where The Other Black Girl really succeeds is its ability to strike a balance between the psychological drama plot and the more comedic moments that crop up elsewhere. (Issa Rae isn't involved, but Nella's struggle is reminiscent of the Awkward Black Girl series that inspired Insecure.) Credit to showrunners Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey and executive producer Rashida Jones for walking that fine line and crafting a show equal parts thrilling and devastating in its takedown of casual racism in the workplace.
