In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant on July 3, 2025, The Ultimatum: Queer Love season 2 star AJ Blount opened up about her decision-making process during the trial marriage stage. AJ, who entered the show after receiving an ultimatum from her long-time partner Britney Thompson, said she was looking for clarity on whether marriage was the right next step.
As part of the experiment, AJ chose Marie as her trial marriage partner in The Ultimatum: Queer Love, opting not to pursue a connection with Marita. Explaining her decision,
“I needed somebody a little bit more grounded. She seems like a girlie in the wind. I’m a girlie in the wind. And I think two girlies in the wind would get lost in the wind,” AJ said.
She shared that while she had a strong friendship with Marita, their similar personalities wouldn’t have helped her find the clarity she was looking for. AJ and Britney eventually left the show engaged, and AJ said both the trial marriage and Britney’s growth played a big role in her decision.
“Britney’s just not somebody that I’m willing to lose,” AJ said.
During the interview, The Ultimatum: Queer Love star AJ shared that she chose Marie for the trial marriage because she was looking for balance. Although she had a close connection with Marita, AJ felt their similar personalities might make things more confusing. She also mentioned that Marita being younger made her more unsure about the match.
“I think Marita posed a lot of things that I probably wasn't looking for at the time. I didn't really get to that answer until really like decision day or choice day, but she was four or five years younger than me. So that also posed like a big question mark,” AJ said.
AJ further added,
“At the time I thought the mindset would be a little bit more different. So that's really why I picked Marie over Marita.”
Her decision to go with Marie was rooted in the desire for a more stable, grounded connection that could help her evaluate her relationship with Britney. Ultimately, the experience helped AJ realize what she truly needed in a partner and prepared her to make a final decision.
Reflecting on her final decision to get engaged, AJ said that seeing Britney’s growth during the experiment helped her understand how serious Britney was about their future. She credited Marita for offering insights from her own trial marriage with Britney in The Ultimatum: Queer Love, which gave AJ a new perspective. It helped AJ realize that Britney was willing to find balance.
“She didn’t create this business just to throw you to the wolves,” Marita told her.
AJ explained that her concerns were never about Britney’s career itself but about how it affected their relationship.
If you could give me work-life balance, that means you can give our future kids work-life balance,” she said.
AJ further added that she never wanted to be in competition with Britney’s goals. She said the choice to commit wasn’t easy, but it became clear once she saw Britney's actions aligning with her words.
She added that Britney showing up for her throughout the experiment, despite challenges—proved she was ready to prioritize their relationship long-term. The proposal was emotional, but AJ felt certain she had made the right decision.
