The superhero film Avengers: Endgame was released on April 26, 2019, in theaters, marking the end of the Avengers movie series. The film was directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, and the screenplay was provided by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The movie series is based on the Marvel comics Avengers by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. As per Box Office Mojo, the film was a major box office success as it grossed $2.799 billion worldwide.
The story follows the surviving members of the Avengers and their allies as they try to reverse Thanos' actions in Infinity War, which erased half of all life in the universe. One of the many standout moments from Avengers: Endgame involved Captain America wielding the Asgardian hammer named Mjolnir. What made lifting the hammer, an almost impossible task, a standout moment was the fact that only those whom it finds worthy will be able to wield it.
The Russo brothers appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused Podcast in May 2018 to have a spoiler-filled discussion about the concluding chapter of the Avengers. While speaking on the subject of Captain wielding the Asgardian hammer, Mjolnir, Joe Russo noted that the inspiration for it goes back to that bit in Age of Ultron.
“I think it goes all the way back to Ultron. I think everyone who’s a Marvel fan, in that moment where Cap tested the hammer, felt deep down in their heart that he was worthy and that he could potentially lift that, and boy wouldn’t it be special one day if he did. And obviously if you create drama around the circumstances of him wielding the hammer and then kicking Thanos’ ass for 30 seconds after that, we felt like we could create a risible moment for the audience.” explained Joe Russo.
According to Anthony Russo, he’s always been worthy, and during that moment in Age of Ultron, he stopped himself from lifting the hammer fully out of deference to Thor.
“In our heads, he was able to wield it, and he didn’t know that until that moment in Age of Ultron when he tried to pick it up. But Cap’s sense of character and his sense of humility, sort of out of deference to Thor’s ego, you know, Cap, in that moment realizing he can move the hammer decides not to.” Said Anthony.
As per IMDb, Avengers: Endgame received a positive approval rating of 8.4/10 with over 1.4 million user reviews so far.
The official synopsis for the film, as per Marvel’s official website, reads:
“The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios' grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.”
The final chapter was directed by the Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe. The screenplay for the film was written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and produced by Kevin Feige. It also features an ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Josh Brolin as Thanos.
Other notable features include Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, and Brie Larson as Ms. Marvel. Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, and Gwyneth Paltrow feature in the film as well.
Avengers: Endgame has a runtime of 3 hours and 1 minute. As per filmratings.com, the superhero movie was rated PG-13 by the MPAA for sequences of sci-fi violence, action, and some language. It is available for the audience on the Disney+ app.
