Dexter: New Blood recap: Everything to know before Dexter: Resurrection arrives

  • Dexter: New Blood brings Dexter Morgan back to the screens almost eight years after the original show came to an end. Created by Clyde Phillips, it is a continuation of the story that centers on Dexter (Michael C. Hall), a forensic technician specializing in blood spatter analysis by day and a vigilante serial killer by night.

Dexter: New Blood is set 10 years after the events of Dexter, which ended with the titular protagonist faking his death. In this show, Dexter is seen living a life of anonymity as Jim Lindsay in the town of Iron Lake, upstate New York, hoping to outrun his past and keep his murderous tendencies suppressed.

With Dexter: Resurrection's release looming on the horizon, it is time to take a walk down memory lane and see what happened in New Blood.

Dexter returns to his old habits in Dexter: New Blood

Dexter: New Blood sees Dexter living a quiet life in Iron Lake as an employee at the local store and dating Police Chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones). When his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), shows up at his door, Dexter refuses to admit that he is his father to keep the young boy away from the darkness inside him.

Unfortunately, Dexter fails to keep the Dark Passenger, aka the side of him that wants to punish the people who escaped justice, at bay when he meets Matt Caldwell (Steve M. Robertson). Matt is the son of a rich and powerful businessman, Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown), who killed five people in a boating accident but had his friend take the fall for him.

Initially, Dexter succeeds in suppressing the urge to kill Matt. However, when the latter illegally kills a white reindeer and nearly hits Dexter in the act, Dexter knocks him unconscious before eventually murdering him. Then, he finds Harrison and reveals the truth to him.

Dexter's next victim is Jasper, a local drug dealer, who sells drugs to teens in Iron Lake. When Dexter finds out that Harrison overdosed on the drugs that Jasper supplied, he decides to kill him after briefly being interrupted by Logan.

Dexter also kills Elric Kane (Shuler Hensley), the kidnapper Kurt Caldwell hired to avenge his son's murder. Kurt, who is a serial killer himself, is the next person who dies at Dexter's hands, but it does not end there, as Dexter also kills Logan (Alano Miller).

Dexter escapes prison in Dexter: New Blood, but not his son's judgment

Before getting murdered by Dexter, Kurt tips off Angela about Dexter's past. Suspicious that Dexter is the Bay Butcher, Angela contacts Miami Metro's sheriff, Angel Batista (David Zayas), who is shocked to hear that Dexter is alive. Angela's suspicions are confirmed, and she arrests Dexter.

Dexter manages to distract Angela by revealing his knowledge about Kurt's bunker full of mummified corpses of women. Angela leaves Dexter under Logan's surveillance to go and investigate Kurt's bunker. Determined to reunite with Harrison, Dexter decides to kill Logan, who was also Harrison's wrestling coach.

Initially, Dexter tries to convince Harrison that they should leave the town and never come back. However, Harrison, who has a Dark Passenger of his own, soon realizes that his father's code is flawed when he finds out that Dexter killed Logan, an innocent man, to escape prison.

Dexter, too, realizes that he has become the man he had spent so many years getting rid of, and that Harrison is a better person despite everything. Dexter says:

"I’m sorry for everything I’ve done to you. You deserve better, a better life, a better father."

As Harrison points a locked and loaded gun at his own father, with whom he so desperately wanted to connect, a teary-eyed Dexter continues:

"You have to take the safety off, just like I showed you. This is the only way out."

Harrison adds, "For both of us," before shooting Dexter in the chest. Just before getting shot, the vigilante killer's inner voice says:

"I’ve never felt real love until now."

Right after he is shot, Dexter adds, "You did good." When Angela arrives at the crime scene, she finds a bleeding Dexter lying on the snow while Harrison is more than ready to be arrested. However, Angela gives some money to Harrison and tells him to leave the town as she prepares to pretend that she shot Dexter in self-defense.

In the truck, Harrison finds a letter Dexter had written to Hannah, expressing his deep love for his son and explaining his painful decision to leave. Dexter admitted that his dark urges would ultimately harm Harrison, and leaving was the only way to protect him.
