The investigation in Rob Reiner and his wife Michele's death continues after the couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday (December 14). The county's medical examiner revealed the following day that both had died in a homicide after suffering from multiple sharp force injuries.

Their younger son, Nick Reiner, was taken into custody on Sunday night. And by Tuesday, he was charged with his parents' murders. The latest news in the case, as of Wednesday, December 17, includes Nick Reiner's brief visit before a judge.

The New York Times reported his first appearance at an arraignment in downtown Los Angeles to answer the murder charges. The meeting reportedly only took roughly five minutes before the rest of the arraignment was rescheduled for January 7, 2026.

Reiner reportedly agreed when Judge McGonigle asked him if he wanted to waive his right to a speedy arraignment and continue the proceedings in the New Year.

The media were inside the courtroom but the judge had earlier ordered them not to film Reiner. According to the BBC, he was wearing a jail suicide-prevention smock. His lawyer, Alan Jackson, addressed the reported following the hearing, saying:

"We ask that during this process, you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward."

He also told the reporters not to rush to judgment or jump to conclusions and give the system, the process, and the family the respect they deserve.

Investigators on Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner's deaths are now looking at a Santa Monica hotel

A Santa Monica hotel is now a place of interest as investigators trace Nick Reiner's movements and piece together his whereabouts before his arrest for his parents' murders. The Pierside Santa Monica is a beachfront hotel where Reiner reportedly checked in hours before he was arrested on Sunday.

There are no comments from hotel staff or the Sage Hospitality Group that manages the hotel at the moment. It's also still unclear what time Nick Reiner checked into the hotel, what he did while he was there, and how long he stayed at the hotel.

Nick Reiner was also spotted in a security camera buying a sports drink at a gas station an hour before he was arrested. It was near Exposition Park, and the New York Times noted that both the park and the hotel are five minutes or less on foot from Los Angeles County's light rail stations.

More details on Rob and Michele Reiner's deaths were revealed on Tuesday. A Los Angeles Police Department official reported to the city's police commissioners that the couple's bodies were found in the master bedroom area of their home in Brentwood.

Assistant Chief Dominic Choi told the police commission that Nick Reiner's arrest on Sunday came after "information developed during the early stages of the investigation" pointed to him as the first person of interest. Reiner was reportedly found and arrested on Sunday night in Exposition Park near the University of California campus.

The Reiner siblings spoke publicly for the first time after losing their parents and their brother was arrested

Jake and Romy Reiner spoke publicly for the first time on Wednesday since their parents' murder and their brother's arrest. They shared a statement, per The New York Times, describing the "unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day" following their parents' killing. They added:

"The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."

They also acknowledged the outpouring of condolences and support they received from family and friends following the tragedy.

Romy Reiner was the one who found Rob Reiner's body on Sunday after getting a call from a massage therapist who arrived at her parents' house for a scheduled appointment.

Nick Reiner will remain in custody at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles until his next hearing on January 7 next year.
