How many immortals are there in The Old Guard? Details explored

The Old Guard, released on Netflix in July 2020, is a superhero movie based on Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez's eponymous comic book series. A sequel to the film hit Netflix on July 2, 2025, and features the return of the original characters, along with some new additions.

Although the movies are set in modern times, the characters they follow are immortals who are somewhat old and prehistoric. While Gina Prince-Bythewood directed the first movie, the second film is helmed by Victoria Mahoney.

A total of eight immortals are featured in The Old Guard and its sequel. Out of these, five were introduced in the first film, two in the sequel, and one of them was thought to be lost, but resurfaced in The Old Guard 2.

Who are the immortals in The Old Guard?

The leader of the immortals in The Old Guard is Andromache of Scythia, aka Andy. Portrayed by Charlize Theron, Andy is the oldest known immortal born in Central Eurasia and initially considered a god. She is plagued by a crisis of faith when the viewers see her. Nevertheless, she protects her own. At the end of the first movie, she loses her powers.

Kiki Layne plays the newest immortal, Nile Freeman, a former US Marine in Afghanistan who discovered her powers after surviving a stab on her neck. She joined the group of immortals despite her apprehension.

Matthias Schoenaerts appears as the 200-year-old Sebastian Le Livre/Booker, the second youngest immortal after Nile. Booker was originally a Napoleonic soldier and is not a fan of his powers. He is temporarily exiled by the group due to some questionable decisions that he made.

Luca Marinelli and Marwan Kenzari portray Nicolò di Genova/Nicky and Yusuf Al-Kaysani/Joe. Nicky and Joe discovered that they were immortals while fighting against each other in the Crusades. In the battlefield, they kept killing each other, but soon their hate turned into love.

Veronica Ngo plays Quynh, the first immortal Andy met. Andy and Quynh fought together for centuries before they were captured during the witch trials. While Andy was able to escape, Quynh was not as lucky. Initially, she was considered lost, but made a return in the sequel film.

Who are the immortals introduced in The Old Guard 2?

An immortal introduced in this movie is Uma Thurman's Discord, who is revealed to be the oldest of all and has spent centuries in secrecy. She is an enemy of Andy and her crew of immortals. Speaking to Netflix's own publication Tudum, Thurman said:

"Discord is shrouded in mystery throughout the movie. As one of the oldest immortals, she’s been alone the longest and has come back with a lot of angst and frustration in her motivation — not a great fan of humanity, very unlike the movie’s hero, Andy."

Another immortal introduced in The Old Guard 2 is Tuah, portrayed by Henry Golding. He is a 2300-year-old immortal who met Andy after the witch trials. He prefers being alone, so he is only introduced in the sequel when Andy needs his help. Although he is a great warrior, he has dedicated a lot of his life to documenting the existence of each immortal on earth.
