The ViacomCBS cable network has partnered with the The Smurfs license-holders for an all-new original CG-animated series and a consumer products line. The deal will allow Nickelodeon to have global rights to The Smurfs, a new series of which will premiere in 2021. ViacomCBS will also be allowed to sell a new product line of Smurfs toys, stationary, apparel and accessories, home, consumer packaged goods and more starting in 2022. “The Smurfs is an iconic global franchise that has resonated with audiences for decades,” said Pam Kaufman, president of ViacomCBS' consumer products. The Smurfs, a Belgian comic franchise created by Peyo, has spawned three feature films and a 1981-89 NBC TV series.
