Prince Philip, Duke of Edindburgh and Queen Elizabeth II's husband, dies at 99

Philip's death comes two months shy of what would've been his 100th birthday on June 10. It also comes after he was hospitalized in late February for one month for various ailments. "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," the royal family's website announced. "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss." Philip was born in 1921 and was known as the Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark before and during his service in the Royal Navy. In November 1947, he married then-Princess Elizabeth and assumed the title of Duke of Edinburgh. In recent years, Philip became known for his portrayal on Netflix's The Crown, first by Matt Smith in the first two seasons and Tobias Menzies in Seasons 3 and 4. Jonathan Pryce is expected to play Prince Philip in Seasons 5 and 6. The team behind The Crown issued the following statement: "Netflix, Left Bank Pictures, Sony Pictures Television and the production team on The Crown are deeply saddened to hear of the death of The Duke of Edinburgh. Our thoughts are with the royal family at this sad time."Philip is survived by his four children, including Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Princess Anne. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, including Prince William and Prince Harry, and numerous great-grandchildren.
