Davies revived the Doctor Who franchise in 2005 after a 16-year hiatus. The Queer as Folk creator is taking over from outgoing showrunner Chris Chibnall after creating acclaimed limited series Years and Years, A Very English Scandal and It’s a Sin in recent years. Davies will take over the reins in 2023 as Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary. “I’m beyond excited to be back on my favorite show,” said Davies, whose four-year tenure at Doctor Who saw a surge in popularity and two spinoffs in Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. “But we’re time-traveling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm — I’m still a viewer for now.”
