Better Things actor Désert, who is Black, is the first minority actor to take over a minority Simpsons character from one of the show's white stars. Azaria started voicing Carl in Season 1 after Harry Shearer voiced him for one episode. But Azaria opted to stop voicing non-white actors, something which The Simpsons producers turned into a show-wide edict over the summer amid the Black Lives Matter protests. Désert will make his debut on Sunday's Season 32 premiere, but it's unclear if he'll be Carl's permanent voice or whether he'll be voicing other characters.
