A Michigan community is left in mourning following the tragic death of Jennifer Harris, a 39-year-old McDonald’s manager who was murdered by a coworker earlier this month.

As friends and family have been left to grapple with the senseless act of violence, a GoFundMe campaign was set up to help support her six children and has now raised more than $9,000 thanks to an outpouring of compassion from people across the region.

According to a report by Click On Detroit, the deadly incident took place at a McDonald’s on 9 Mile Road in Eastpointe on July 10, 2025. Afeni Muhammad, a 26-year-old employee,  allegedly stabbed Harris “up to and possibly as much as 15 times” after being sent home from her shift that morning, prosecutors said.

"She produced a weapon that was a knife longer than 3 inches, and she stabbed the victim multiple times, up to possibly as many as 15 times, eventually causing her death," Hengeveld stated.

As the specifics of the case came into focus, friends, family and members of the community began focusing on Harris’s children. The GoFundMe campaign, set up by Daviney Harris, speaks to Jennifer's efforts as a separated parent and her work to support her family.

"She died trying to provide for her kids. She was a good person to everybody. Harris’ children would need help with everything. Anything counts," the GoFundMe campaign read.

According to the campaign bio, all funds raised will be used to help with funeral costs, and for assistance with Jennifer Harris' children while they begin life without their mother.

Prosecutor Sian Hengeveld talks about Jennifer Harris tragic death

At the arraignment for Muhammad, Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Sian Hengeveld offered some details about the attack. According to the case reports, Muhammad was sent home but returned to the restaurant armed with a knife minutes later and attacked Harris in front of other employees.

Several people on staff tried to help Harris, but she was eventually pronounced dead. The prosecutor also talked about Muhammad’s violent history and stated that she had previously stabbed a person.

"The defendant does have a prior instance of at least one that I’m aware of that involved a stabbing, similar obviously to the stabbing that occurred in this case, involving a knife," Sian Hengeveld said.

Muhammad is charged with first-degree murder; carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent; and being a habitual offender. The judge, Kathleen G. Galen set bond at $25 million and imposed strict conditions on release, including GPS monitoring and a ban on contact with both witnesses and the victim’s family (Click On Detroit)

Afeni Muhammad is due in court July 23 for a probable cause conference and on July 30 for a preliminary examination.
