Cartoon Steve Martin Hits the Beach in Only Murders' 'Angel in Flip Flops' Music Video

Only Murders in the Building has released a music video for Detective Brazzos' fictional hit song "Angel in Flip Flops."

"Angel in Flip Flops" was introduced in last week's episode of Only Murders in the Building, "Here's Looking at You." In the world of Only Murders, the upbeat tune, sung by Steve Martin's character Charles Haden-Savage — a former TV star on the fictional detective drama Brazzos — was released in a 1980s episode of Brazzos and was a "big hit" in Germany until the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In the episode, Charles plays the song for his podcast co-hosts Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez). Mabel quickly recognizes the song because it's been "sampled by, like, 50 rap stars," she says, including Post Malone, Missy Elliott, and Del the Funky Homosapien. Charles reveals that because of its popularity, he's been making around $200,000 in royalties every year.

Another scene flashes back to Charles and his ex-step-daughter singing "Angel in Flip Flops" when she was a child, a moment they call back to at the end of the episode.

In the "Angel in Flip Flops" music video, released on Monday, a cartoon version of Steve Martin and a woman in shorts and flip-flops walk along the beach as he sings.

"I am as proud of 'Angel in Flip Flops' as I am of any work I've done that is not that good," Martin, who co-wrote the song with Kirker Butler, said in a statement.

"When the notion came up in our writers' room of Charles-Haden Savage, at the height of his success with his original Brazzos series, maybe having recorded an album that did really well in Germany before the Berlin Wall fell, we knew we had to talk further about it — immediately!" added Only Murders in the Building co-creator John Hoffman.

Martin himself is also a musician. He plays the banjo and has won Grammys for Best Bluegrass Album and Best American Roots Song. Martin has also toured with other bluegrass musicians such as Steep Canyon Rogers and Earl Scruggs.

Only Murders in the Building is currently streaming on Hulu, with new episodes dropping every Tuesday.
