It’s been over a year-and-a-half since the teens of Outer Banks last graced our screens, but they finally make their grand return to Netflix this month. Outer Banks Season 3 picks up a few weeks after the Pogues narrowly escaped Ward Cameron’s (Charles Esten) container ship — without the Cross of Santo Domingo — and landed on a deserted island in the middle of the Caribbean. As they attempt to make their way back home, they discover just how many people are after the Royal Merchant treasure, and the lengths each is willing to go to get their hands on the bounty.

OBX 3 promises to challenge the characters’ “Pogues for Life” mentality more than ever before. Relationships are tested, new alliances are forged, and the search for the treasure reaches dangerous new heights. As creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke reveal: “The Pogues realize that their adventures in the first two seasons were merely the prelude to the granddaddy of all treasure hunts.”

From the new big bad to filming locations, here’s everything to know about Outer Banks Season 3:

What is Outer Banks Season 3 about?

The Pogues are no strangers to treasure hunting, but in Outer Banks Season 3, their search for the Royal Merchant gold becomes life or death after they find themselves in the crosshairs of a ruthless Caribbean Don. Season 3 begins with John B, Sarah Cameron, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and newcomer Cleo washed ashore on a deserted island — which JJ promptly deems Poguelandia — but their idyllic vacation is cut short when they realize how many enemies they’ve made over the past few months. Broke and far from home, the crew must take drastic measures to return to the safety of the Outer Banks, but little do they know, new threats and life-altering surprises await.

But it’s not all doom and gloom for the Pogues: OBX 3 also sees John B reunite with his father, Big John, whom he believed to be dead for the past year. Big John was revealed to be alive in the final moments of Season 2, but despite his near-death experience, he’s now more determined to find the treasure than ever before.

And of course, it wouldn’t be Outer Banks without some romantic intrigue. In Season 3, John B and Sarah Cameron’s relationship is tested for the first time, while JJ and Kiara continue to dance around their feelings, and Pope puts his heart on the line, yet again.

Where does Outer Banks take place?

Outer Banks is set on Kildare Island, North Carolina. The town and surrounding county are works of fiction, but their name is inspired by Kill Devil Hills, a popular local beach town, and Dare County, one of the three counties that make up the Outer Banks.

That said, Outer Banks doesn’t actually film in the OBX: Much of the show is filmed in and around Charleston, South Carolina (production on Season 3 took place in Spring 2022). The season’s Caribbean-set scenes were filmed in Barbados.

Who’s joining Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, and Chase Stokes in the Outer Banks Season 3 cast?

The entire Outer Banks cast returns for Season 3, including John B (Chase Stokes), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), JJ (Rudy Pankow), Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), and Kiara (Madison Bailey). On the Kook side of the island, Rafe (Drew Starkey) and his revived father Ward (Charles Esten) stir up trouble, while Topper (Austin North) becomes something of an ally to the crew.

Beyond the returning stars, Carlacia Grant, who plays Cleo, has been upped to series regular for Season 3, appearing in every episode with her fellow Pogues. Other additions to Outer Banks Season 3 include Charles Halford as Big John; Andy McQueen as villain Carlos Singh, a ruthless Don on a treasure hunt of his own; and Lou Ferrigno Jr. as Ryan, Singh’s top enforcer.

Beyond OBX 3, where can I watch other Madelyn Cline movies and TV shows?

The premiere of Outer Banks Season 3 caps an exciting few months for Madelyn Cline. In December, Cline played Whiskey, Duke’s (Dave Bautista) girlfriend, in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Rian Johnson’s Oscar-nominated Netflix sequel.

OBX and Glass Onion are Cline’s most prominent roles to date, but she has also appeared in Boy Erased (currently streaming on HBO Max) and 2021 film This Is the Night (available on Netflix), as well as the first two episodes of Stranger Things Season 2.

When does Outer Banks Season 3 premiere on Netflix?

Outer Banks Season 3 premieres February 23. All 10 episodes of the season will drop on Netflix at once.

Held in Huntington Beach, California, the event is free to attend, with tickets available on a first come, first serve basis. The only rule? No Kooks allowed.
