Upfronts have come and gone, but Netflix is still teasing the big releases on the horizon. The streamer’s just realized the briefest of first looks at The Witcher Season 4, which will see Liam Hemsworth step into Henry Cavill’s leathers as the new Geralt of Rivia. The silver wig is laid and the red eyes are flashing, as Hemsworth glances back at the camera (or maybe one of his questing companions, we’re not sure) in an early attempt to bolster confidence in this recasting.

Netflix also shared the logline for Season 4: “After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire and finding one another again.”

Hemsworth knows his way around a massive franchise, having starred in The Hunger Games series alongside Jennifer Lawrence and popped up in action films like Independence Day: Resurgence and The Expendables 2. But taking over for Cavill in The Witcher as The Witcher is going to be a tougher road to hoe.

As Jarrod Jones noted after the end of Season 3, replacing Cavill may prove to be a “thankless task” for Hemsworth. The Netflix adaptation has always been shaky in places, especially as the old Geralt prepared to depart, but the once-but-not-future Superman helped steady things. Season 4 won’t just have to fill the void Cavill leaves behind, but also right the larger ship.

A preview of the costuming and hair design isn’t enough to help fans make up their minds one way or another, so Netflix has also shared casting news ahead of the Season 4 premiere. Sharlto Copley joins the cast as Leo Bonhart, a notorious bounty hunter from The Witcher novels — a great fit for such a live-wire actor. James Purefoy, who’s menaced both Elisabeth Moss and Adrian Monk in recent months, will play Skellen, another prominent figure from the books. Danny Woodburn has also signed on to play a fan favorite: Zoltan Chivay.

Hissrich remains showrunner and will also write an episode. Javier Grillo-Marxuach is also back as a writer and executive producer alongside Mike Ostrowski. Seasons 4 and 5 (which will end the series) are being filmed back to back.

Danette Chavez is the Editor-in-Chief of Primetimer and its biggest fan of puns.
