English-Greek footballer George Baldock, aged 31, was found dead in October 2024, sending shock waves across the sports fraternity.

Almost nine months after the footballer was found dead in his swimming pool at his Athens home, the cause of death has been determined to be drowning; however, the circumstances of his personal life leading up to his death, as well as what happened during his final moments, remain shrouded in mystery.

Baldock was found unresponsive in his pool on October 9, 2024, after his landlord alerted police when he didn't respond to calls. An autopsy found no drugs or alcohol in his bloodstream, but it found an enlarged heart that may have made him prone to an arrhythmia.

George Baldock was a private person who generally kept his personal life under wraps. He was engaged to Annabel Dignam, and the pair shared a son named Brody. Dignam described him as her “soulmate” and “world’s greatest dad” in an emotional Instagram tribute. The duo had planned to celebrate Brody’s 1st birthday together just days before Baldock's death.

"You are here with me in Brody's smile, giggle and infectious personality. My world will never be the same but I will find a way for Brody. I promise." She added in her caption.

A look into George Baldock’s recent medical report

According to The Sun, Baldock, being an Englishman of Greek descent, won 12 caps with Greece and memorably kept Kylian Mbappé off the scoresheet in a 2023 Euro qualifier – despite then-manager Gus Poyet saying it was "unimaginable" as a result of Baldock’s fractured ankle going into the match.

Although early reports suggested a half-empty bottle of vodka was found beside the pool, foul play or criminality has been ruled out by officials.

"A post mortem examination confirmed that there were no drugs or alcohol in his system and that he had a very large heart that would have meant that he was susceptible to heart arrhythmias," an enquiry report obtained by People reads.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm that may be too slow, too fast, or irregular. Though some are harmless, others can cause serious complications, such as cardiac arrest. The severity ranges from mild to severe, and so does the treatment, which depends on the type of medication.

A former Sheffield United and Greece’s national team player, George Baldock, played at Panathinaikos since 2024 and was appreciated for his work rate and defensive attributes.

Tributes were shared by teammates, clubs, and rivals, and the Sheffield United chairman spoke of Baldock’s “huge energy,” while the Panathinaikos chairman mourned the “untimely loss.” Pundits, including Roy Keane and Ian Wright, remembered his fighting spirit.
