FIRST ON PRIMETIMER: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa knows a little something about adapting iconic characters for younger audiences on the small screen. For his next project, the creator of Riverdale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and the upcoming Katy Keene is sinking his teeth into a reimagining of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Recently given a pilot order by ABC, The Brides is described a sexy vampire soap about empowered, immortal women and the things they do to maintain wealth, prestige, legacy and their nontraditional family. The spec script first made the rounds late last year as its producers launched a preliminary search for actresses to play the title roles.
Although we don't know who, if anyone, has been cast, Primetimer can now reveal which characters appear in the pilot script. (And yes, Count Dracula himself is among them.)
No spoilers here, but theres's more to three women at the heart of The Brides than you might think at first glance.
The brides operate much like a family so let's start with the oldest of the three, CANDACE MUNROE, who serves as "the mother" of the group. Dark-skinned and regal, she's in her mid-thirties and works as a powerhouse real estate agent in New York, where the show is set. She has a dedicated young assistant, PETER, who'd follow her anywhere (and often does).
The middle bride is named RENEE PELAGIE, is in her early thirties and she's French. She's discribed as voluptuous, and she runs a model agency. Think Anna Wintour. She's also omnisexual or pansexual, meaning she's attracted to people regardless of their sex or gender identity. Her designer friend XAVIER is always by her side.
Finally, there's twenty-somthing LILY STEVENS, the youngest bride, who's in her twenties. She's pale skinned, cultivated, sensitive, and she works as a tour guide in the Metropolitan Museum of Art when she's not playing cello. She's a bit of a rebel within their group, since she has a boyfriend, ARTHUR, who would kill to marry her, but that's not something she's supposed to do (even though she's craving it, too).
As for DRACULA, he appears in the pilot via flashbacks showing how each of the women met him. He's described as handsome and muscular, with (yep) thick, dark hair.
Rounding out the cast is LUDOVICO, the handsome italian personal chef for the women who provides them with fresh blood served as red smoothies among other succulent things. Also making appearances in the pilot script are ABRAHAM VAN HELSING, JACK THE RIPPER and the MARQUIS DE SADE, as well as JONATHAN HARKER and his wife MINA who are included in the mythology.
