Trevor Noah Dings ABC for Suspending Whoopi Goldberg From The View

Trevor Noah is taking aim at ABC for suspending Whoopi Goldberg from The View over her controversial comments about the Holocaust. On Wednesday night, The Daily Show host insisted that Whoopi wasn't "trying to hurt anybody" by saying that "the Holocaust is not about race," and he encouraged ABC to use her "mistake" as a "teaching moment."

While Noah did defend Whoopi, he was clear that what she said on Monday's episode of The View was wrong. "I understand why people were upset with what she said. Because the way she said it, it made it sound like the Holocaust was just some white people who were fighting some other white people," he said. "But as the spokesman for the Anti-Defamation League later explained to her, Hitler did see Jews as a separate race, and even worse, as a separate species."

"The Holocaust had everything to do with race," he added. "And I'm glad that Whoopi apologized, because I don't think she was trying to hurt anybody here. I think she made a mistake."

"And I will say, I think it's a little weird that her network suspended her for sharing her view on The View," continued Noah. "I mean, if she's remorseful, why send her away? Isn't it better to keep her and then use this as a teaching moment? Then you can have everyone watching also learning, like, 'Oh, I actually didn't know that about the Holocaust.' Maybe they didn't. Rather than sending her away for two weeks to do what? Reflect and do her own research?"

The Daily Show host concluded by noting that we've seen what happens when we tell people to "do their own research" on a given topic. "That's never a good idea," he said. "These days, you tell someone to go research the Holocaust on their own, and they'll come back in two weeks like, 'Did y'all know that the Jews have space lasers?!'"
