We’re entering the traditional May season finale season. It’s a thing that means less now that the traditionally defined borders of the “TV season” have ceded to the Thunderdome that is Peak TV, where new shows premiere nearly every day, with no breaks for things like the holidays or summer. This has happened at the movies too, to a certain degree. “Summer Movie Season” begins in late April (hello, Avengers: Endgame) and runs through August, although blockbuster-style movies will stake out territory in February or November if they need to. Still, at least there's a vague notion of seasons (summer season, awards season, releases clustered around the holidays).
The current state of anarchy on TV requires constant vigilance. Just, you know, from your couch. Here, then, are some recommendations to help keep the chaos at bay for another day:
SEASON FINALE: The second season of At Home with Amy Sedaris wraps up tonight. Only one more episode of Sedaris’s delightfully unhinged take on Martha Stewart-style lifestyle branding that recalls the best of Tracey Ullmann and Saturday Night Live, featuring a parade of guest stars from Matthew Broderick and Justin Theroux to Ana Gasteyer and Rose Byrne. Tonight’s episode, called “Game Night,” welcomes the bug-eyed intensity of Michael Shannon. Can’t wait. 10:00 PM ET on TruTV
SERIES PREMIERE: Jay and Mark Duplass are behind the new HBO documentary series On Tour with Asperger’s Are Us, which follows the four-man comedy troupe as they tour the country in a Winnebago that is both adorably quaint and anxiety-inducing for many of us not on the Asperger’s spectrum. The six-part series airing in double-doses over three consecutive nights this week promises both laughs and insight. 8:00 PM ET on HBO
SEASON FINALE: The first season of Bravo’s Mexican Dynasties comes to a close this week, with the show on the cusp of breaking through as Bravo’s next hot reality series. Like the best of Bravo's guilty pleasures, the Mexico City-set series is compulsively watchable and gossipy as all get out. 10:00 PM ET on Bravo
SEASON PREMIERE: Season 6 of The 100 kicks off tonight with something of a reset, as the group moves from a totally uninhabitable earth to a new planet, with its own native species. Judging from the extended trailer, the battles will continue. 9:00 PM ET on The CW
