2023 has just begun, but television is already charging full steam ahead with a huge week of premieres, including Copenhagen Cowboy on Netflix, All Creatures Great and Small Season 3, Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches, and more.

Notable TV Premieres This Week

Will Trent: Tuesday, 10:00 PM ET on ABC

Bestselling novel-to-television adaptations typically land on streaming or premium cable, but ABC gets in on the fun this week with Will Trent, based on Karin Slaughter’s popular series of the same name. Ramón Rodríguez stars as the titular character, a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) who was abandoned at birth and came up in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. Now, Will puts his lived experience and unique point of view into action as the GBI’s most successful detective. The procedural also features The Wire alum Sonja Sohn as Will’s GBI colleague Amanda Wagner.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15: Friday, 8:00 PM ET on MTV

After years on VH1 (and Logo before that), Drag Race sashays over to MTV for its 15th season. Host RuPaul Charles and judges Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley, and Ross Matthews return, as 16 queens compete for the crown and its corresponding $200,000 prize — the largest in franchise history. Ariana Grande joins as guest judge for the two-episode premiere, while other stars — including Ali Wong, Megan Stalter, and Janelle Monáe — will appear throughout the season.

Boys in Blue: Friday, 8:00 PM ET on Showtime

Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg spotlights the North Community High School football team as its players navigate life after the murder of George Floyd. The predominantly Black student-athletes are coached by members of the Minneapolis Police Department, but despite their differences, they find common ground on the field in their drive to win a state championship. In addition to airing linearly over the next four weeks, Boys in Blue will stream in its entirety on demand and via Showtime streaming platforms beginning Friday, January 6.

Alert: Sunday, 8:00 PM ET on Fox

Different network, different police unit, same procedural action. Over on Fox, John Eisendrath (The Blacklist) and Jamie Foxx executive produce a new drama set in the Philadelphia Police Department’s Missing Persons Unit (MPU). As MPU chief Nikki Batista (Dania Ramirez) and her team investigate life-or-death cases, she and her ex-husband Jason Grant (Scott Caan) embark upon a series-long quest to find out the truth about their son, who disappeared six years ago while overseas. Following Sunday’s premiere, Alert will move to its usual timeslot (Mondays at 9:00 PM ET).

All Creatures Great and Small: Sunday, 9:00 PM ET on PBS

It’s a season of change in the Yorkshire Dales as James (Nicholas Ralph) and Helen (Rachel Shenton) reach their wedding day, Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) faces the world as a (legitimately) qualified veterinarian, and Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) opens herself up to new opportunities. All Creatures Great and Small’s M.O. has traditionally been of the warm-and-fuzzy variety, but for the first time, disaster looms as World War II approaches, giving the British drama an edge in Season 3.

Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches: Sunday, 9:00 PM ET on AMC (Streams on AMC+)

The Year of the Vampire gives way to the Year of the Witch with AMC’s adaptation of Anne Rice’s bestselling trilogy, starring Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus Season 1) as a young neurosurgeon who discovers she’s the unlikely heir to a family of witches. Over the course of eight episodes, she grapples with her newfound powers, while also contending with a sinister presence that has haunted her family for generations.

The Lying Life of Adults: Wednesday, Netflix

As the world awaits the fourth and final season of My Brilliant Friend, Netflix offers a different Elena Ferrante adaptation, The Lying Life of Adults. Newcomer Giordana Marengo stars as Giovanna, a young woman coming of age in Naples who finds herself torn between two worlds: the bourgeois society of her parents, and the lower-class neighborhood of her Aunt Vittoria (Valeria Golino, The Morning Show). As she grows closer to Vittoria, Giovanna begins a journey of self-discovery that prompts her to rethink everything she knows about her family.

Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street: Wednesday, Netflix

Veteran documentarian Joe Berlinger (Conversations With a Killer) directs a four-part docuseries that purports to reveal the truth behind Bernie Madoff’s billion-dollar Ponzi scheme. The doc combines never-before-seen video depositions of Madoff with interviews with whistleblowers, employees, and victims to reveal the ways in which a willfully blind financial system allowed his fraud to flourish for decades.

Copenhagen Cowboy: Thursday, Netflix

Three years after Nicolas Winding Refn made the jump to television with Prime Video’s Too Old to Die Young, he continues to innovate within the medium. In Copenhagen Cowboy, the first project produced in his native Denmark in 15 years, Refn introduces the world to Miu (Angela Bundalovic), a young heroine with supernatural abilities who slinks through Copenhagen’s criminal underworld seeking vengeance against her nemesis, Rakel (Lola Corfixen). The neon-drenched thriller unfolds across six episodes.

Finale Time

Mythic Quest Season 3: Friday, Apple TV+

Forever overshadowed by Ted Lasso, Mythic Quest concludes another season of workplace comedy shenanigans and professional rivalries. The series — created by Rob McElhenney (who also stars), Charlie Day, and Megan Ganz — has already been renewed for a fourth season, with a spinoff, Mere Mortals, in the works at Apple.
