Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Premiere: Thursday, Paramount+

As the third and final season of the continuing voyage of Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard begins, the aging Starfleet legend is confronted with a new adversary in the form of Amanda Plummer’s mysterious and vengeance-bent Vadic. With Plummer taking over the family business of bedeviling Starfleet (dad Christopher Plummer memorably played Captain Kirk’s nemesis in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country), it’s a good thing Picard’s got help in the form of old crewmates LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner, all of whom are on hand for one final battle.

Animal Control: Thursday, 9:00 PM ET on Fox

Joel McHale leads a sitcom about a cop turned reluctant animal control officer in a dysfunctional department beset by a reliably exotic roster of unruly wildlife. Joining the former Community star are Vella Lovell, Ravi Patel, and Grace Palmer, all struggling to figure out why their sleepy town finds itself overrun with drug-eating bunnies, kangaroos, ostriches, and the occasional giant snake.

Carnival Row Season 2 Premiere: Friday, Amazon Prime Video

Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne return for the second and final season of this grim and gritty tale of an England where mystical beings live in uneasy proximity to fearful humans. With Bloom’s human-passing inspector Rycroft Philstrate and Delevingne’s winged fairy warrior Vignette Stonemoss caught in the middle, Season 2 sees the humans waging all-out war against their winged and horned fae neighbors, with explosive and heartbreaking consequences for all involved.

Hello Tomorrow!: Friday, Apple TV+

Billy Crudup stars in this retro-futuristic series set in a 1950s-style America featuring everything from robots to jetpacks, where a hustling team of salespeople (including Hank Azaria, Dewshane Williams, and Nicholas Podany) are tasked with selling the very first timeshares on the moon. Co-starring Alison Pill, Haneefah Wood, and Jacki Weaver, Hello Tomorrow! combines the darkly comic alt-universe gimmickry of the Fallout video game series with a Mad Men aesthetic, anchored by the charismatic Crudup’s idealistic pitchman to the stars.

The Company You Keep: Sunday, 10:00 PM ET on ABC

This Is Us alum Milo Ventimiglia stars alongside Catherine Haena Kim in an action-romance series about a pair of star-crossed lovers. How star-crossed? He’s a con man one step ahead of the vengeful crook seeking to destroy his high-tech grifter family, while she’s the CIA agent investigating the crime that put the bad guys on his tail. Can these crazy, sexy kids make it work while bullets and lies fly around them? Based on the Korean series My Fellow Citizens, The Company You Keep also stars William Fichtner, Polly Draper, Sarah Wayne Callies, and Tim Chiou.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver Season 10 Premiere: Sunday, 11:00 PM ET on HBO

After cleaning up once again at the 2022 Emmy Awards (that’s 26 Emmys for Last Week Tonight thus far, in case you’re counting), John Oliver returns for his tenth term as the guy valiantly wringing laughs out of each week’s depressing, appalling, and outright rage-inducing news. The former Daily Show standout has his work cut out for him, what with the Republican Party hell-bent on banning everything from books to abortion, and Congress infested with braying QAnon kooks and un-indicted seditionists. But if anyone can find the funny in all that mess, it’s Oliver.

Planet Sex With Cara Delevingne: Tuesday, Hulu

Model, actress, and LGBTQ+ activist Delevingne heads this six-episode documentary series in which she examines how sex, sexuality, and gender are expressed (and repressed) all over the world. With the intrepid Delevingne engaging in thought-provoking conversations with people from all ends of the sexuality and gender spectrum and personally delving into subcultures from polyamory to pornography, Planet Sex presents a vibrant, liberating picture of human sexuality at a time when puritanical anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry is on the rise.

Finale Time

All Creatures Great and Small Season 3 Finale: Sunday, 9:00 PM ET on PBS

All Creatures Great and Small’s 1930s-set tale of educated veterinarian James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) attempting to win over the crusty and suspicious farmers of rural Yorkshire concludes its third season with its annual Christmas special. As Primetimer’s Mark Blankenship notes of this cozy but biting British drama, “The show’s gentleness becomes an earned victory instead of an unchallenged given.”
