This week, The Tourist Season 2 trades the Australian outback for the greenery of Ireland as Elliot (Jamie Dornan) and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) search for the truth about Elliot's past. Plus, FX's Shōgun adaptation lends new depth to James Clavell's novel, The Good Wife universe grows with CBS spin-off Elsbeth, and Noel Fielding becomes an unlikely outlaw in The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin.
Tuesday, 10:00 PM ET on FX and Streaming on Hulu
After more than five years in development, FX's Shōgun adaptation is finally here. Fans of James Clavell's bestselling novel and the groundbreaking 1980 TV miniseries will recognize the plot of the historical epic, which centers on the intertwined journeys of Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a Council of Regents member with many enemies; English navigator John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis); and their translator Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a Chinese noblewoman.
As Laura Sirikul wrote in her review for Primetimer, co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo effectively capture the political upheaval of feudal Japan in the 1600s, conveyed via intense battle sequences and brutal violence. But they also expand the story by diving deeper into Mariko's backstory and taking moments to celebrate Japanese culture and the country's people. Two episodes drop Tuesday on Hulu (and air linearly on FX), followed by one every week through April 23.
Thursday, Netflix (Full Season)
*Our must-watch pick of the week
It's hardly a spoiler to say that international man of mystery Elliot (Jamie Dornan) survived his attempted drug overdose in the final minutes of The Tourist Season 1 finale. The crime thriller came and went when it premiered on BBC and Max in 2022, but it gained a second wind when it was saved by Netflix, the show's new U.S. streaming home.
With its many twists and surprising emotional beats, The Tourist quickly nabbed the top spot on Netflix's Top 10 list, but questions remained about Elliot, who awoke from a car accident with no memory or knowledge of his identity, and his violent history. In Season 2, Elliot and police trainee Helen (Danielle Macdonald) travel to Ireland on a hunt for answers, but when Elliot's past once again comes calling, they're drawn into the middle of a longstanding family feud. As the body count increases, Elliot and Helen's budding relationship is put to the test, and they must rely on each other like never before in order to make it out alive.
Just as Season 1 embraced the arid outback, Season 2 leans into its new setting. A host of new actors join the show, including Conor MacNeill as Detective Ruairi Slater and Diarmaid Murtagh, Nessa Matthews, Mark McKenna, and Francis Magee as members of the ruthless McDonnell family. The addition of these Irish actors gives The Tourist Season 2 a distinct feel, even as the criminal element they represent ensures the six-episode installment remains familiar to binge-watching viewers.
Thursday, 10:00 PM ET on CBS
Carrie Preston's Elsbeth Tascioni appeared in less than 20 episodes across The Good Wife and The Good Fight's multi-year runs, but now, she's stepping into the spotlight in her own spin-off. After leaving her career as a defense attorney behind, Elsbeth moves to New York City and eagerly embraces a new chapter on the other side of the law. Elsbeth has been hired by the Department of Justice to oversee the NYPD, but the offbeat lawyer just can't help but get involved in investigations, much to the chagrin of old-school Captain C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce) and the delight of Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), who finds herself charmed by Elsbeth's unconventional methods.
Despite its Good Wife roots (Robert and Michelle King also created the spin-off) Elsbeth is very much in the vein of quirky detective procedurals like Monk and ABC's Will Trent. It's a new look for the legal franchise, but it's hard to fault CBS for wanting to spend more time with the Emmy-winning Preston, who never met a scene she couldn't steal.
Friday, Apple TV+
In 18th-century England, there was one name on everyone's lips: Dick Turpin, a famous highwayman known for petty thievery and wild escapades. Rather than offer a factual retelling of his adventures, Apple uses them as a jumping-off point in this charming comedy that sees Dick (Noel Fielding, best known to American audiences for his work on The Great British Baking Show) become the reluctant leader of a ragtag group of highway robbers. As Dick and his crew seek their fortune, they must reckon with their own incompetence and conflicted consciences — all while outwitting Jonathan Wilde (Hugh Bonneville), a corrupt lawman known as The Thief Taker. Two episodes of the ahistorical romp drop Friday.
