Hightown, Starz's iconic crime drama series, premiered on the platform in May 2020, and went on to become one of the best-known TV series to date. Over the years, the show also amassed a huge fan following and even has a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, the show's expanding arc was cut short after three seasons.
The third and final season of Hightown premiered in January 2024 and wrapped up in March, leaving fans with more questions than answers and no semblance of closure. All three seasons of the show were added to Netflix earlier this month.
However, there have been no official announcements regarding the renewal of Hightown for a fourth season so far.
Besides Hightown, Starz cancelled several other shows. While the platform has not revealed the reason behind this decision officially, the general consensus is that they could no longer afford to make this show unless it was bringing in huge viewership and great ratings.
So, cutting this show short seemed to be purely a budgetary decision. TVLine first revealed the news of its cancellation in December 2023.
There were no publicly known feuds or behind-the-scenes drama between the stars or the creators. The fact that season 3 had plenty of cliffhangers to explore in a new season made the show's cancellation sting even more.
When asked about the possibility of a prequel, follow-up, or spin-off in an interview with The Hindu in April 2024, creator Rebecca Cutter said:
"From your lips to God’s ears. That’s above our pay grade. We love working together and I certainly would love to write more about Jackie."
Cutter's most recent project, The Hunting Wives, was initially supposed to be produced by Starz. It is now a Netflix original series, but neither Starz nor Cutter has spoken about this change.
In fact, Starz removed Hightown from its library in March 2024, according to a Show Snob article from June 2025.
The show follows the story of a National Marine Fisheries Service Agent named Jackie Quiñones, who suffers from addiction and alcoholism. After discovering a woman's dead body, she can't help getting involved in the investigation behind the dead woman's murder, which delves into Cape Cod's organized drug syndicate.
In season 3, Jackie is a narcotics officer trying to balance the chaos of her personal life alongside her demanding job.
She finds herself continuing her battle with addiction as she attempts to solve the mystery behind a woman's disappearance, although her recollection of the incident is vague.
Ray and Renee try to settle into their new life with their baby and start anew. However, Renee slips back into her old habits as she returns to running the strip club and also level one drug dealing.
Meanwhile, Renee's ex-husband Frankie uses a dedicated fan named Rachel to help him control the outside world. This move puts Renee and Ray's newfound stability at risk.
Over the seven episodes, Jackie's addiction gets worse before she decides to get sober, Frankie's death remains shrouded in mystery, and Ray's fate at Internal Affairs is unresolved. Further, Ray and Renee’s relationship, nor Jackie’s with Leslie, reaches a clear conclusion.
All of these plotlines are left hanging at the end of season 3, contributing to fans' frustration with the abrupt ending.
Hightown is now available to stream on Netflix.
