“Why does it sound deep fried?” — Jojo Siwa’s teaser for new mv ‘Chris Hughes’ Eyes’ with a transformed bold look prompts reactions online

Jojo Siwa has teased her upcoming cover of Kim Carnes' 1981 song, Bette Davis Eyes. For the unversed, the singer performed at the Tecate Emblema music festival in Mexico in May 2025.

At the festival, she covered the song. However, she changed the lyrics to "Chris Hughes' Eyes," seemingly hinting at her relationship with Celebrity Big Brother UK costar Chris Hughes. In June 2025, she confirmed her relationship with Hughes in an interview with The Guardian.

On Monday (July 7, 2025), Jojo Siwa uploaded a video on TikTok and Instagram, singing Bette Davis Eyes while dressed up in an old Hollywood getup. The singer stated that she had recorded a full version of the song and would release it on Spotify by the end of this week.

The teaser was reuploaded on X by the user @shirlpuzz, garnering over 11,000 likes. Netizens had a mostly negative reaction to the teaser, bashing Jojo Siwa's voice and the use of autotune. One user (@DrainedByRobin) jokingly said her voice sounded "deep fried."

​Netizens slammed the 22-year-old singer, criticizing her vocal fry. Some said Siwa supposedly sounds like she smoked a pack of cigarettes every day.

"She sounds like she's been smoking a pack of cigs everyday since birth... with autotune placed over it," one netizen wrote.

"I've seen this at least 7 times without sound. Read so many comments each time. When I say I was still so unprepared for the atrocity bestowed upon my ears," another netizen added.

"Vocal fry can sounds good when you are singing but this is honestly not just vocal fry from time to time, HER VOCAL IS FRIED THROUGH THE WHOLE SONG AND THE AUTOTUNE IS NOT HELPING," another X user wrote.

Netizens continued to criticize Jojo Siwa's singing. Some jokingly made an Euphoria reference, asking why she was dressed like she was from Oklahoma.

"Her voice is one marlboro away from gone and dressed like she's going to audition for oklahoma," another user added.

Jojo Siwa shared that she felt pressure to come out as lesbian

In an interview with the Daily Mail on June 20, 2025, Jojo Siwa claimed that when she came out as pansexual at 17, she received "pressure" from her social circle and the LGBTQIA community to come out as a lesbian.

"When I came out at 17, I said, 'I'm pansexual, because I don't care.' But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said, 'I'm a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of pressure," she said.

In an interview with E! News, the singer stated that she now identifies as queer, and feels "happy and peaceful" with her current partner reality star Chris Hughes.

Jojo Siwa previously dated content creator Kath Ebbs. They broke up in April 2025.
