The Emmys bit, running less than 3 minutes, basically checked a "Black Lives Matter box" for the Emmy ceremony, says Cydney Henderson. "With a platform this large, the Emmys could have and should have done more," says Henderson. "This was a time to be firm in their support instead of briefly mentioning it. Instead, the broadcast could have taken time to highlight what steps the academy is taking toward equality or the show could have allotted time for stars to speak about the Black Lives Matter movement, similar to the way first responders got a platform to speak about the coronavirus." As Henderson points out, other Black stars made up for that sketch, including Regina King, who wore a Breanna Taylor shirt while accepting her Emmy for Watchmen. ALSO: Anderson's Black Lives Matter speech was "powerful."
