There are still a few weeks left in 2023, as well as dozens more holiday movies. But if you’re already keeping an eye out for next year’s biggest shows, you’re in luck — this week has been full of trailers, from the action-packed Brothers Sun preview to a first look at AMC’s latest supernatural series.

Best trailer for the week of December 4: The Brothers Sun, premieres January 4, 2024 on Netflix

After playing a goddess in American Born Chinese, Michelle Yeoh returns to TV early next year in a slightly more down-to-earth role: the head of a major crime family in The Brothers Sun. As Eileen Sun, Yeoh is one cool customer, not even flinching when a gun is pressed to her knee during an interrogation by a rival gang member. But the moment her less capable son Bruce (Sam Song Li) comes up, all bets are off.

Justin Chien co-stars as Charles, Bruce’s hunky older brother and a pretty badass assassin. When their family and enterprise comes under attack, the Suns have to band together, which means filling Bruce, a teen who’d rather kiss his girlfriend by the pool than be drawn into a massive turf war, in on just what the family does. It’s early yet, but series creators Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu look like they’re striking the right balance between family dramedy and rousing action.

Honorable mention: Mr. & Mrs. Smith, premieres February 2, 2024 on Prime Video

Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith series is really embracing the reboot approach: The action-comedy starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as the titular couple does away with the whole “let’s conceal our murderous professions from each other” premise of the 2005 film. Instead, John (Glover) and Jane (Erskine, who replaced Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the role) know exactly what kind of life they’ve both signed up for: spies by night, bored spouses by day.

So, naturally, the first trailer gives off more of a “The Americans vibe” than the sense that it’s a spiritual successor to Doug Liman’s film starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. That’s still promising! Paul Dano, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Parker Posey, and Wagner Moura guest star — deep breath — along with Alexander Skarsgård (who appeared in the final season of Atlanta), Eiza Gonzalez, Sarah Paulson, Sharon Horgan, Ron Perlman, Billy Campbell, and Ursula Corbero.

Honorable mention: Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale, premieres January 4, 2024 on AMC+ and Sundance Now

Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale, based on V.V. James’ 2020 novel of the same, joins a solid lineup of supernatural dramas on AMC+/Sundance Now that already includes Interview With the Vampire and Mayfair Witches. The series is set in the bucolic English town of Sanctuary, where a witch, Sarah Fenn (Elaine Cassidy), has lived peacefully with her family among the town’s non-witchy residents.

The death of the local golden boy changes all of that, though — soon, Sarah and her daughter Harper (Hazel Doupe) learn just how intolerant their neighbors are (and let’s face it, have always been).

Honorable mention: True Detective: Night Country, premieres January 14, 2024 on HBO

The latest True Detective: Night Country preview is suitably spine-chilling — before the carnage in the tundra is even revealed, Detective Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) is already making a prophetic and disturbing proclamation: “The night country takes us one by one.” And it just gets more harrowing from there.

The full trailer offers a closer look at the history between Navarro and Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster), who grudgingly join forces to investigate the disappearances of eight men in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska, six years after some blowout. We also see more of the cast, including Fiona Shaw (who can’t help but be commanding), Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes, June Thiele, Joel D. Montgrand, and Diane Benson.
