Michelle Yeoh Kicks Butt and Takes Names in Netflix's The Brothers Sun

2024 gets off to a fast start this week with the high-profile premiere of Netflix action dramedy The Brothers Sun, starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as a matriarch attempting to outrun her past. Plus, Fool Me Once aims to cure your holiday hangover, AMC offers more magic and mayhem in Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale, and Daughters of the Cult exposes "Mormon Manson" Ervil LeBaron.

Fool Me Once

Monday, Netflix (Full Season)

Harlan Coben's last TV adaptation, Prime Video's Shelter, left a bit to be desired, but the prolific author turned executive producer redeems himself with Fool Me Once. The psychological thriller stars Michelle Keegan as Maya, a former soldier grieving the death of her husband Joe (Richard Armitage) in the wake of his brutal murder. Just when Maya begins to get her life back on track, she's thrown for a loop when she spots Joe, suddenly very much alive, on a nanny cam, prompting her to strike out on her own in search of the truth.

As with much of Coben's work, there's a lot going on in Fool Me Once — which also follows the detective (Adeel Akhtar) investigating the crime and the potential connection between Joe's murder and the shooting death of Maya's sister months prior — but the limited series effectively brings these storylines together. Its many twists, theatrical performances (particularly from Joanna Lumley as Maya's mother-in-law), and unintentional moments of comedy make it the perfect drama to sink your teeth into as you recover from the holidays.

Netflix's The Brothers Sun is not for the faint of heart. The new series, created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, blends expertly choreographed (and intensely graphic) fight scenes with family drama and brotherly antics as Eileen "Mama" Sun (Michelle Yeoh) fights to protect her sons, formidable assassin Charles (Justin Chien) and naive slacker Bruce (Sam Song Li), from a deadly threat. For years, Eileen has shielded Bruce from the truth about their family's ties to organized crime in Taipei, but when her husband (Johnny Kou), the head of a powerful triad, is nearly assassinated, she's left with no choice but to introduce Bruce to this dangerous world and face her past head-on.

Yeoh is no stranger to high-stakes action, but The Brothers Sun gives her an opportunity to draw on both her martial-arts background and her immense skill as a dramatic actor. Plus, watching her kick butt never gets old — and with so many enemies chasing after Eileen, Charles, and Bruce, there's plenty of that to go around in the eight-episode first season.

Daughters of the Cult

Thursday, Hulu (Full Season)

ABC News and Hulu's true-crime partnership continues to bear fruit. Their latest effort centers on self-proclaimed prophet Ervil LeBaron (not "Evil," though the docuseries suggests the comparison is apt), the leader of a Mormon fundamentalist sect who ordered his followers to murder his opponents. Decades after the group's deadly rampage in the 1970s, surviving ex-members, including LeBaron's children — he was a prominent polygamist and had at least 13 wives, some of whom were underage — open up about their experience being raised in the cult, their relationship with LeBaron, and the abuse they suffered at the hands of the man who became known as the "Mormon Manson."

Given the subject matter and the emotional testimony of the survivors, Daughters of the Cult isn't an easy watch. But director and executive producer Sara Mast resists the urge to sensationalize this story, cementing ABC News' reputation as a responsible leader in the true-crime genre.

Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale

Thursday, AMC+ and Sundance Now

After finding success with supernatural dramas Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches (both part of the network's Anne Rice Immortal Universe), AMC continues to stake its claim in the genre with Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale. Based on V.V. James' bestselling novel, the show imagines a world where witchcraft is not only real, but valued by society, particularly in the English town of Sanctuary. Sarah Fenn (Elaine Cassidy) and her ancestors have been practicing witchcraft in Sanctuary for centuries, but after teenage golden boy Dan Whithall (Max Lohan) dies, the town becomes suspicious of Sarah's magic and her mysterious daughter Harper (Hazel Doupe). Led by Dan's mother Abigail (Amy de Bhrun), the townspeople launch a witch-hunt, tearing apart the once-idyllic community in the process.

While Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale is fantastical by nature, it's decidedly realistic in its depiction of the bigotry that lies just beneath the surface of seemingly inclusive communities. That real-world connection gives Debbie Horsfield's series a greater sense of urgency, deepening what may otherwise have been a frivolous, supernatural-tinged murder mystery. Two episodes premiere Thursday on AMC+ and Sundance Now, followed by one every week through February 8.
