Aaron Keller, the game director of Blizzard Entertainment’s first-person shooter game, Overwatch 2, recently opened up about the company’s interest in creating a TV series based on the video game. While speaking to streamer Jay3 in a video posted to his YouTube channel, Keller was asked if an Overwatch 2 inspired TV series is on the cards for the developer. Keller responded affirmatively and said,

“We would love to do that.”

Keller continued by discussing the potential of the Overwatch universe for storytelling, lore, and character-building, which has already been explored in the animated shorts.

“I think that like, even more than just like a TV series, one of the things that we see or hear our players talk about a lot, you see online is just like it kind of feels like, Overwatch has dropped the ball when it comes to story and lore.”

Keller addressed the fact that Overwatch 2 doesn’t have as many animated shorts as before and added,

“We used to put a few more like of the big animated shorts out than we do nowadays and to kind of just like speak frankly about it, is we kind of we did have a big plan to go after story in the game that was the PvE side of it with the campaign and everything like that. And it didn't you know, like that didn’t work out and so it was kind of a bit of a reset moment for us when that happened and we would we would like to get back to it. I think it’s, it's like one of the best parts of Overwatch is the universe and the characters that are there. And so like that's definitely a goal of ours to get back to it.”

Aaron Keller referred to the cancellation of Overwatch 2’s story mode

As a sequel to 2016’s Overwatch, Overwatch 2 was widely anticipated to release with a story mode that would expand the characters ’and lore in a more linear narrative structure. As per Esports Insider, Overwatch 2 was also set to include PvE, or player versus environment missions, in addition to the PvP, or player versus player, modes.

However, in addition to frequent delays in the game’s release, Blizzard Entertainment developers announced during a Twitch live stream that the PvE had been cancelled. According to E Sports Insider, Blizzard’s executive producer said that the project was scrapped as it required extensive changes to “every character’s abilities.”

Blizzard did eventually offer $15-priced story missions for Overwatch 2, as per Polygon. However, the sales fared quite poorly, noted Bloomberg.

During his conversation with Jay3, Aaron Keller commented on the PvE cancellation and said,

“It's just there's been a bit of a kind of like a step backwards that we had to take in order for us to be able to start moving forward on it again.”

Now, it remains to be seen when an Overwatch TV series materializes.
