It was revealed Monday that Hal Holbrook has passed away at the age of 95.
Of the five Emmy Awards he won over his 69-year career, the second came for the NBC series The Bold Ones, which was the umbrella name for a rotating group of late 1960s - early 1970s dramas including The New Doctors, The Lawyers, and The Protectors. Holbrook starred in The Senator, as the eponymous Senator Hays Stowe, who was determined to buck the system as it functioned back then.
In this montage of highlights from The Bold Ones: The Senator, we see Stowe addressing problems that are still relevant today, including organized crime compromising a president, giving the government enough of a conscience to honor treaties with indigenous peoples, and the scourge of police brutality and lethal force.
Aaron Barnhart has written about television since 1994, including 15 years as TV critic for the Kansas City Star.
