As Rachel Brosnahan attempts to zing The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to stand-up comedy glory, Édgar Ramírez heads south in crime comedy Florida Man, and Jennifer Garner wonders where Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s disappeared to in Apple’s The Last Thing He Told Me.
Thursday, Netflix (Full Season)
Édgar Ramírez’s Mike Valentine has a few problems. In over his head with a ruthless Philly gangster, the ex-cop is sent to his old stomping grounds in Florida with orders to find the mob boss’s runaway girlfriend Delly (Abbey Lee). Naturally, the job is complicated by his own shady Sunshine State past — and the fact that he’s been sleeping with the missing woman. The darkly comic Florida Man, which marks the second collaboration between Netflix and executive producer Jason Bateman (Ozark), surrounds Ramírez’s conflicted detective with a colorful cast played by Paul Schneider, Clark Gregg, Lex Scott Davis, and Anthony LaPaglia (as Valentine’s criminal dad). The entire, eight-episode season premieres Thursday.
Friday, Amazon Prime Video
In the fifth and final season of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s award-winning comedy-drama, Rachel Brosnahan’s aspiring stand-up comic edges ever closer to the big time, even as that elusive goal keeps slipping further away. As always, Brosnahan makes the Gilmore Girls creator’s snappy, rapid-fire dialogue sing, though Midge Maisel’s driven career obsessions sometimes make her hard to root for. This season, Midge and her trusty manager Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein) work to land Midge a set on Gordon Ford’s (Reid Scott) national talk show, while the series’s stacked supporting cast, including Tony Shalhoub, Luke Kirby, Kevin Pollak, and Caroline Aaron, make Sherman-Palladino’s 1950s showbiz patter reliably witty. Still, as Nick Rheinwald-Jones noted last year, there’s a problematic edge to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s steamroller wish-fulfillment and unacknowledged privilege, which has only gotten more extreme as the Emmy-winning show marches towards its finale.
Friday, Apple TV+
In this limited series adaptation of Laura Dave’s bestseller, Jennifer Garner’s wife and stepmom Hannah finds her perfect life thrown into chaos when her seemingly loving and ordinary husband (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) disappears, leaving only a note telling Hannah to protect his rebellious teenage daughter Bailey (Angourie Rice), and a duffle bag filled with cash. The Last Thing He Told Me’s seven episodes see Hannah and Bailey uncover deep, dark secrets aplenty, while co-stars Geoff Stults and Aisha Tyler aid the reluctantly bonding mother/stepdaughter pair as they search for the truth. The first two episodes stream Friday.
Friday, 8:00 PM ET on Showtime
If there’s anything more unlikely than the career trajectory of punk rocker turned crooner David Johansen, it’s the fact that the New York Dolls lead singer’s career retrospective has been directed by none other than Martin Scorsese. Following the flamboyant Johansen’s rise, his glam rock fame with the critically adored but overlooked Dolls, and his unlikely success as lounge lizard one-hit-wonder Buster Poindexter, the film provides him an overdue showcase. Scorsese and co-director David Tedeschi present Johansen’s journey with a heady mix of archival footage, interviews, and performance footage from Johansen’s 2020 cabaret show, in which the still-singular performer alternated songs and reminiscences about the 1970s New York art scene that also helped spawn Scorsese’s Oscar-winning career.
